| A conversation about solidarity |
| We also had a brief discussion about the importance of solidarity and how we all need each other in order to be free. Solidarity matters as an act of compassion and as a strategy for survival and liberation. When marginalized groups show up for one another, we build collective power that no single community could generate on its own. Though there might be tensions between communities sometimes, (that’s real — we’re human!) we have to stay focused on fighting for liberation for all. None of us are free until we’re all free. An incredible moment of solidarity happened recently in Florida. A preliminary injunction was issued in a federal lawsuit brought by environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida to stop migrants from being sent to Alligator Alcatraz. While this issue is far from over, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians showed incredible solidarity by taking action to get these internment camps shut down. Supporting others strengthens our own movements, because when one group wins protections, recognition, or resources, it sets a precedent that benefits everyone. |
